The Loughton Surgery, Loughton

Project: NHS GP Surgery Size: 440 m² Location: Epping Forest Client: The Loughton Surgery A former two-storey purpose-built building has been extended to accommodate for increasing facility needs driven by the desire of the GP practice to broaden the quality and range of services it provides for the local community. The main design challenge was to generate additional usable floor space while integrating the enlarged building within an area of vernacular character and minimising overshadowing and overlooking onto the neighbouring residential property. This was achieved through careful restructuring and subtle re-shaping of the largely redundant existing roof space at first floor level and a modest in increase in overall footprint. The use of a hybrid structure mixing steel with timber frame enabled the construction of a thin lightweight addition to the existing building that could accommodate the altered roof lines while providing an optimal internal usable floor space. The challenge was to build on a tight site whilst maintaining the surgery operational throughout the construction period. Construction was completed early 2017.
