Sikh Gurdwara, Southall

Project: Community

Size: 1,307 m²

Location: Southall

Client: Nanaksar Southall

The scheme proposals seek to redevelop the rear of the site to provide a three storey building to be used as a place of worship for the Sikh community.

The main entrance to the renewed facility is orientated towards the amenity space and garden along the canal side and faces the rear of the car park, enabling independent operation from the Gurdwara.

The ground floor accommodates shoe areas and associated entrance facilities, a dining room (Langar) and a kitchen that will include equipment for preparation and/or warming up of meals. The prayer hall (congregation hall facilities) will be located at the first floor, along with a bridal room and other ancillary and storage spaces.

The top floor provides rooms for overnight stays for certain weekend-long functions in the form of four bedrooms with ensuites for use by visiting musicians or preachers. At this level, a small multi- purpose room will accommodate classes for the purpose of music, language and/or community support.

Finally, a roof-top-covered plant area ensures that all mechanical and electrical equipment is fully integrated into the design of the building, without cluttering the roof. This ensures that the views from the canal are not impacted by exposed plant and equipment.
