Sikh Gurdwara, Ilford

Project: New-Build Gurdwara

Size: 1,650 m²

Location: London, Redbridge

Client: Guru Nanak Sat Sangh Sabha

Construction costs: £4 m

The site has a relatively narrow frontage sandwiched between a four-storey 1960s office block and two storey converted residential building. The two side elevations of the site are obstructed from view by the adjoining buildings.

The front elevation  has heavily profiled carved stonework pilasters, balconies, and Jarookhas – ornately carved stone oriel bay window structures. The front roof terrace is accentuated with small chattris, or viewing shelters, each of which has a small domed roof.

The building embodies a transition of cultures, technologies, and time. Two pilasters framing the main entrance were emblazoned with five motifs each representing Punjab and Redbridge respectively.

This challenging site was developed in two stages: Shell & Core a Main Contractor along with a specialist team of Indian stonemasons carving and installing the stonework features to the front elevation. Agenda 21 were also in charge of procuring the carved stonework from India.
